The most recent Local Assembly Coordinators’ gathering brought together Coordinators from Assemblies across Terra Australis, in a collaborative and practical discussion focused on strengthening community engagement and improving how Assemblies function.
The meeting created a valuable space for Coordinators to exchange real experiences from the ground, share what is working within their Local Assemblies, and explore ways to build greater participation and consistency across meetings.
The discussion began with Coordinators reflecting on recent visits to police stations and courthouses to deliver paperwork. These experiences highlighted both positive interactions and moments of resistance.
Anthony and Sharon shared examples where their approach led to constructive outcomes, while Wayne spoke openly about challenges encountered and the importance of how interactions are handled. These reflections provided useful insight for others, reinforcing that approach, tone and preparation can all influence how these situations unfold.
Hearing a range of experiences allowed participants to learn from one another and build a clearer comprehension of what to expect in similar situations.
A significant portion of the meeting focused on how to increase engagement and participation within Local Assembly gatherings.
Natalie shared an approach using brown paper and rotating discussion topics, creating a more interactive environment where participants actively contribute rather than passively observe. This method encourages movement, discussion and shared input across different topics.
Wayne reinforced the importance of shared responsibility within Assemblies, noting that engagement naturally increases and people feel more invested in the process.
Sharon outlined a more structured meeting format that includes dedicated segments such as health discussions and smaller project-based groups. These groups focus on practical issues, including areas such as speeding fines and banking, allowing members to work together on specific challenges.
Elizabeth and Faith contributed additional ideas, including the use of introductions, action groups and simple interactive elements such as quizzes to help create a more inclusive and engaging environment.
Together, these approaches demonstrate how Assemblies are continuing to evolve, with a clear focus on participation, structure and shared contribution.
The meeting also explored how Assemblies are welcoming new participants and helping them feel comfortable entering the space.
Sharon and Terry spoke about the use of “Newbies Days” as a way to introduce people to the Assembly in a relaxed and supportive setting. These sessions typically include educational videos, open discussion and informal conversation, allowing newcomers to engage without pressure.
Faith highlighted the value of group interaction during these sessions, noting that simple tools such as quizzes can help break down barriers and encourage participation from those who may otherwise feel unsure about contributing.
Providing clear and accessible entry points for new members was recognised as an important part of building strong, lasting Assemblies.
Another topic discussed was the use of informational pamphlets as a way to share knowledge with the broader community.
These materials provide a non-confrontational approach to communication, allowing people to engage with information in their own time. This method supports awareness without creating pressure, making it a practical tool for outreach.
The conversation briefly touched on a hydro setup device for fuel saving. While participants acknowledged that results have been mixed, the topic was recognised as relevant in the current environment of rising fuel costs.
This discussion reflected a broader interest in exploring practical solutions that may assist people and families in managing everyday challenges.
Looking ahead, the group identified document processing support as an area to be explored in future meetings. This will allow Coordinators to continue building practical systems and sharing knowledge across Assemblies.
The meeting was conducted efficiently, with respect for participants’ time, while still allowing for meaningful discussion and contribution from those involved.
The ongoing collaboration between Coordinators reflects a growing network of Assemblies that are learning from one another and building stronger foundations.
As more Coordinators share their experiences and approaches, Assemblies across different areas are able to develop with greater clarity, confidence and consistency.
These gatherings continue to play an important role in supporting those involved, providing a space where practical knowledge can be exchanged and where Coordinators can move forward with a clearer sense of direction.
